Excavations inward Ribe, Kingdom of Denmark present that Viking civilisation was based on sophisticated production together with trade. Is their roughshod reputation unfair?
In an extraordinary instant captured on cinema this summer, the tuning pegs together with cervix of a lyre, a harplike stringed instrument, were carefully prised out of the soil of Ribe, a picturesque town on Denmark’s south-west coast. Dated to some AD720, the regain was the earliest show non only of Viking music, but of a civilisation that supported instrument-makers together with musicians.
The same earthworks equally good flora the remains of wooden homes; moulds for fashioning ornaments from gold, argent together with brass; intricate combs made from reindeer antlers (the Viking equivalent of ivory); together with amber jewellery dating to the early on 700s.
Even to a greater extent than extraordinary, however, was the regain that these artefacts were non for abode consumption yesteryear farmers, allow lonely itinerant raiders. Instead, the Vikings who made them lived inward a settled, urban community of craftsmen, seafarers, tradesmen and, it seems, musicians.
